“End of Life” Disposal : Volkswagen and Audi

An interesting article in The Times highlights a new scheme which came into force at the beginning of 2007 regarding the disposal of “end-of-life-vehicles”.

From the beginning of 2007, manufacturers are now responsible for the safe disposal of vehicles under their brand and will issue owners with an official DVLA Certificate of Destruction (CoD). Manufacturers have joined forces with existing dismantlers to create a UK-wide network of “Authorised Treatment Facilities” to which car owners can deliver their old vehicle to be scrapped, free of charge.

The motivation behind the scheme being brought into force is pretty clear-cut:
Previously, car owners themselves would have to pay approximately £25 for a vehicle to be scrapped. In many instances, this led to vehicles literally being dumped by owners unwilling to pay for disposal. Similarly, it is hoped that by pushing the financial onus of disposal onto the manufacturer, it will curb the illegal scrapping of cars and ensure that disposal is carried out in accordance with environmental standards.

In practice, car owners looking to dispose of their old car will need to check a website which is specific to their brand to find out details of where they need to deliver their car.
For Volkswagen and Audi Owners, this website is www.cartakeback.com - here you can find not only the nearest “Authorised Treatment Facilities” but also details of how individual car parts are recycled and used elsewhere
Approximately 10% of the 2 million cars scrapped each year in the UK fall under the Volkswagen brand (including Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley)
